My journey into using cloth nappies

It’s been a really tough couple of months in terms trying to get to grips with using reusable nappies.

Since becoming pregnant I was adamant that I wanted to use reusable nappies to help reduce the impact of thousands of nappies going to landfill and the amount of money being spent on nappies that can only be used once.

This post is not a review of the nappies I have tried. It is merely my thoughts on nappies and what worked for me and what didn’t.

When bubs was born and I was in hospital for a few days we used disposable nappies but eco friendly ones from beaming baby. They worked well for us however very expensive.

When we got home we decided to give our birth to potty pack which we invested in after doing research and found that the nappies were just too big to fit our little squidge. I was very frustrated that I spent so much money on something I couldn’t use yet and had to wait until he became a bit more of a chunk.

That never happened really. He kind of chunked a little bit, but then grew taller, but I found the totsbots that I bought didn’t last more than 2 hours. Now I changed baby’s nappy every 4 hours after his feeds so got incredibly disheartened when I found I would have to change these more often. Not a big deal I hear you say, well, no, in hindsight it wasn’t a big deal, but if you read my previous post on the trauma I experienced giving birth, and feeing incredibly disconnected, I wanted something a bit easier.

So we went back to disposables for a while until he got a bit bigger.

I decided to try and do some more research and found some Facebook groups of preloved nappies which were brilliant with advice and also selling nappies. I get a bit annoyed that I hadn’t researched more and found these groups as I would have bought one or two different ones to try before invested a lot in the totsbots.

I found some extra inserts on eBay so I thought I could boost the totsbots nappies to make them last longer so got those

When they arrived they were too big to fit in the nappy so when I put them on bubba I had to keep it on the biggest setting. Which also meant that these ones which are supposed to be birth to potty, just wouldn’t last that long.

So then I researched into the brand of inserts I got and found they do nappies too! So I bought 6 Little blooms nappies to try and have those a go.

They were awesome. I loved the absorbency, they lasted 3 hours plus a bit more so I didn’t mind changing him a little bit more frequently, but not every 2 hours.

I have been sold on these ever since so bought more to be able to use all the inserts. I have found that the charcoal ones last longer than the normal bamboo so keep an eye on what I’m putting him in.

But I also love the fact they come in some lovely designs so he has the cutest bum every time I change his nappy.

My favourite is the moustache one because he just looks adorable in them.

At the moment I just have 1 extra load of washing to do a week, but the more I decide to go full time cloth I’m sure that will increase to 2. Which I have no problem with.

I’ve been finally using reusable for 3 days in a row (I still use disposable at night time) and I feel that much better for doing my bit to look after the planet my little squidge is growing up in.
